What should I expect when doing Schema Therapy?

When doing Schema Therapy, your psychologist will help you:

  • Understand your major schemas and coping strategies, and how these play out in your day-to-day life

  • Develop more helpful coping strategies and schemas

  • Learn tools and strategies to empower you to overcome your unhelpful schemas

As there can be a lot to uncover when exploring your schemas, Schema Therapy is typically a longer form of therapy and may take more sessions to complete.

What is Schema Therapy?

Schema therapy is an evidence-based psychological treatment that centres around the idea that everyone’s experiences in childhood result in stories that we tell ourselves in adulthood. These stories are the schemas that guide our emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. Some schemas can be helpful, while others can be unhelpful. Schema therapy focuses on exploring the unhelpful schemas and aims to equip you with the tools you need to overcome and move past your unhelpful schemas. Schema Therapy can sometimes be used alongside Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) for effective treatment.

Is Schema Therapy helpful for me?

Schema Therapy is particularly helpful if you experience long-standing patterns, including:

  • Chronic low self-esteem and self-worth

  • Extremely high standards or perfectionism

  • Unhelpful behavioural patterns stemming from childhood

  • Repeated relationship difficulties
